Aussies wrap up series
April 26th 2006 13:11
I think my post at the very beginning of the Bangladesh tour put a curse on the home team, with their latest one-day display to be somewhat abismal in comparison to their efforts in the test series. After being rolled for 197 in the first one dayer, the Bangladeshi side gave their at times vocal crowd nothing to cheer about by being bundled out for 183, with the Aussies posting a modest total of 5/250 from 50 overs.
The Aussies were struggling at 3/65 after 13 overs, but some poor field settings, which saw an exaggeratingly defensive field enabled Symonds (103*) and Clarke (54) to set up a match-winning partnership, with Martaza the only bowler to trouble the Aussies by taking dismissing the top three cheaply (Gilchrist, Katich and Ponting). Chasing an achievable total, the Bangladeshi batting display let them down miserably by playing unnecessary strokes, which ultimately led to three of their top 4 batsmen out for scores under 2, including 2 ducks. However, middle order batsmen Bashar (70) and Mashud (36) managed to regain some pride for the home side by putting on a respectful partnership of 76, before the tail collapsed, losing 6/37 within 8 overs. The Australian bowlers put on a disciplined performance with Hogg (3/34 off 9 overs), Lee (2/29 from 8 overs), Bracken (2/16 from 6) and Clarke (2/16 off 4 overs) the most outstanding amongst the 7 bowlers used by Ponting.
Despite being flogged in the one-day series, the Bangladeshi side will most definitely learn from their current experiences with the world's best, which will ultimately lead to essential improvements before next year's world cup.
