Cricket Scores: West Indies vs India, 3rd test
June 26th 2006 05:15
The Windies are in a great position to score the first win of their 4 match test series agains India. With a lead of 332 runs with just one day to play, the home side were in the box seat for the majority of the game thanks to some tremendous batting. Openers Chris Gayle and Darren Ganga got the ball rolling for the Windies as they put on a 143 run partnership before Gayle was bowled for 83. Sarwan (116) and Ganga (138) continued the wonderful start as they both piled on centuries to put the home side in a comfortable position. To add to this, middle order batsmen Shivnerine Chanderpaul (97*) and Marlon Samuels (87) put on a great partnership to solidify the Windies' ascendancy in the first innings. Unfortunately, some abismal batsmanship by the lower order prevented the home side from extending their already-mammoth total of 581, but it also deprived Chanderpaul of another test century.
In reply, India started off positively thanks to some remarkable batting by VVS Laxman who was the only Indian to post triple figures (100) in the innings. He also received some needed support by other open Jaffer who managed to notch up 60 runs. However, so inconistent batting by the middle order saw Laxman's efforts gone to waste, as the visitors slumped from 3/157 to 6/220. However, some persistent batting by lower order batmsen Anil Kumble (43) and Harbajhan Singh (38*) managed to salvage some pride for the Indians as they found themselves dug into a massive hole at the end of the first innings.
With one more day to play, and a declaration imminient, the West Indies are hopeful that they can cash in on their great performance with the bat, but the results of the previous two tests definitely show that things don't always go to plan when you're in control. If unable to salvage a win, the fourth and final test will definitely be one to watch.
