England vs Sri Lanka Twenty20 nail-biter evidence of its sucess

June 16th 2006 14:07
Sri Lanka was able to sneak home yesterday, with a two run win over home side England, in their Twenty20 match played at The Rose Bowl in Southhampton. With the visitors batting first, they managed to notch up a modest total of 163, which could have been worse if not for some excellent bowling by all-rounder Paul Collingwood, who collected figures of 4/22, the best figures ever produced by a bowler in the Twenty20 form of the game. The Sri Lankans began explosively, scoring at almost 10 an over with openers Jayasuriya (41) and Tharanga (35) getting the visitors off to a flyer.

In reply, it was Marcus Trescothick who kept the Poms in the game, blasting his way to 72. However, his fellow batsmen failed to adequately support the left-handed opener, as the game came down to a boundary which needed to be hit on the final ball. Debutant Tim Bresnan managed to sky the ball to fine-leg only for it to pull up short leaving the home side two runs shy of victory.

Ultimately, the thrilling display advocates the success of the Twenty20 concept. Paul Collingwood's remarkable efforts with the ball illustrated the 'new' dimension of bowling in the modern game, and the nail-biting conclusion to the match had the crowd shaking in their seats.

That's what cricket should be about.
