Joey Johns playing for the Blues?
July 5th 2006 08:24
Everyone knows Andrew Johns is a freak, but everyone knows that 'Joey' has hung up the boots at representative level - so how can he possibly be playing for the Blues without coming out of retirement? Easy, he isn't playing rugby league at all, he has been asked to make a cameo appearance during the upcoming Twenty20 state tournament. Yes, Andrew Johns is going to play cricket for his state NSW. As a bit of publicity stunt for the SpeedBlitz Blues, Joey will don the blue jersey with bat and ball in hand (possibly) and play a full match of state cricket.
However, despite its surprise and interest it has raised, many have already stood up to criticise the move by NSW cricket, deeming it to be 'disgraceful' to the game. One individual to oppose the move was former Australian Test opener Michael Slater. Furthermore, Joey's iYour text goes herenability to play the game in comparison to the state level opposition such as explosive paceman Shaun Tait state that he and the other players will not 'back down' to Johns, as there is 'a cup to play for' - and quite rightly so, with prize money and a trophy to be claimed for the inaugural series.
So I guess it's up to the individual whether they support Johns' cause, but then again it's only 20 overs, so the chances of Joey batting is fairly low, and he doesn't have to bowl... that leaves Joey just to field. But then again, it would be pretty hilarious to see Johns come up against some 140km/h thunderbolts...
