Langer's spot under fire by gun Jaques
July 31st 2006 03:29
Gritty opening batsman Justin Langer has come out openly after suggestions that young gun batsman Phil Jaques could snake his opening position for the upcoming Ashes series which begins in November. Jaques has every right to question the selectors over a possible selection in the starting XI, with a more than impressive off-season which consisted of double centuries for both Australia A and county side Worcestershire. Jaques' prowess as an opener has critics raising questions over Langer's possible dropping from the squad to make way for the talented Jaques, however Langer suggests that it should not only be him that should be under pressure, but all the top 6 batsmen should be all feeling the heat.
Langer also stated that his 'one hundred test' experience should provide him with some 'credit points with selectors'. With Michael Clarke and Damien Martyn only recently finding their feet back into the test squad, Jaques is certainly a hot contender if any of those in particular were to slump during the test match series. Despite this, Langer continues to bat on with a milestone 342 for his county side Somerset - one of his first matches back after being heavily concussed in South Africa.
