Lara saves the Windies in another enthralling draw

June 15th 2006 13:51
West Indies captain Brian Lara has notched up another century (120*) and has played a pivotal role in his side's second draw against the visiting Indian side. With the Indians amassing a mammoth 588 (Sehwag 180, Dravid 146 and Kaif 148*), the Windies were never in the game after replying with a mediocre 215. Opener Chris Gayle topped the batting chart with 46 as the Windies put on a stale batting display, whilst bowlers Patel, Kumble and Sehwag all bagged a tidy 3 wickets a piece. Failing to reach the follow on, the Indians sent the home side back into bat over 2 days remaining.

However, another miracle was on the cards when Lara strode to the crease.

Lara received great support by batsmen Ganga (26 from 66 balls), Chanderpaul (54 from 113 balls) and Bravo (47 from 124 balls) who managed to frustrate the Indians by lingering at the middle for as long as possible whilst the master Lara was at work on his match saving century. Once again Anil Kumble proved to be the best of the Indian bowling attack, bagging another 3 wickets off just 98 runs in his 42 overs, however he and his fellow bowlers were unable to bowl out the Windies, despite only needing 3 more wickets.

The 3rd test of the 4 test series begins on the 22nd June at St. Kitts. A win at this stage of the tournament seems to be invaluable.
