Poms and Pakistan start series with a draw
July 18th 2006 13:24
England and Pakistan began their 4-test series at Lords' with a draw overnight, with the visitors managing to salvage a draw after a see-sawing test which saw both sides put on some exquisite batting efforts. Those to notice were Paul Collingwood's 186 and Mohammud Yousef's 202, with both batsmen helping their sides to post mammoth totals.
England managed to notch up a massive 528, thanks to Collingwood's century which overshadowed supporting centuries by Cook (105) and Bell (100).
Despite being a strong position after their first dig, the Pakistanis were saved by Yousef, who basically saved the visitors single-handedly, but did receive some support by captain Inzamam-ul-Haq (69) and Akmal (58), until they were bowled for 445.
With some outstanding batsmenship shown, the bowlers stepped up in the second innings, as the Poms were bundled out for 298. It could have been a lot worse for the home side without a test-saving century by opening batsmen Andrew Strauss (128). With a whole day to bat, the Pakistanis managed to salvage a draw as they put on a solid batting performance, only losing 4 wickets for 218 runs, with 'Inzie' leading the way with an unbeaten 56.
The second test begins on Thursday 27 at Old Trafford, with both teams looking to secure first blood in an important test series - especially for the Poms who hope to gain some momentum ahead of the much talked about Ashes series in Australia.
