West Indies on top after another thriller
May 24th 2006 07:04
Another thriller between the West Indies and India has resulted in a tight four wicket to the home side. After posting a respectable total of 9/245, the Indians were defeated with just only ball remaining. Sehwag was the top of the Indian batsmen, belting a typical quick fire 97 off just 83 balls. However, after cruising comfortably at 3/210, the visitors slumped badly to lose 6/35 off the last 13 overs to play. Ian Bradshaw was the best of the Windies bowlers with 2/40 from 8 overs, however it was the home side's fielding which put the pressure on the Indians with 3 run outs to Chanderpaul, Gayle and Edwards.
The run chase did not start well for the home side after losing 2 early wickets for just 31 runs. However, their poor start was reconciled by a match-winning performance by both Ramaresh Sarwan (115*), and with Chanderpaul (58), placing the Windies in a winnable position. Chanderpaul's dissimal with only 10 balls remaining, resulted in Bravo's wicket 5 balls later, leaving the home side needing 5 runs off 5 balls, of which Sarwan and wicketkeeper Baugh managed to salvage under pressure. Despite the thrilling win to the Windies, it were Indian bowlers Agit Agarkar (2/32 from 10) and spinner Harbahjan Singh (1/33 off 10 overs) who kept the visitors in the game right until the very end.
The enthralling victory to the West Indies gives them a 2-1 lead in the series, and sets up an interesting conclusion to the one-day tournament with only 2 matches remaining.
