What’s needling Shoaib?
October 19th 2006 03:05
Dear, oh dear, oh dear. If anyone could have put a lazy fiver on the most likely player to find themselves in some sort of non cricket related controversy at the Champion’s trophy, then I reckon a good majority of people would have put their money on Mr Akhtar.
Cricket is not immune from drug scandals and some may say the response since Shane Warne’s one year ban for using masking agents has been a little understated given the international status of the game and the celebrities like Warne and Akhar that make their living from it.
For some reason we sports followers deem it more appropriate to point the finger at individual sports like cycling, athletics and swimming when right in our own sporting backyard we have the likes of Warne and Aktar being caught transgressing the rules for all sorts of reasons. Reasons, I might add, that we have all seen before, except perhaps that Warnie’s Mum night have been substituted by some ‘elite’ sports nutritionist with questionable qualifications.
For years now Akthar has been a special case within the Pakistani team. A cricketing equivalent of the old school Italian soccer prima donas. He trains separately from the team and has often been accused of putting his own interests ahead of his team mates. His special talents and ability to turn a fixture have seen him through many of these sticky situations but unfortunately for those who enjoy his on fields talents it looks as though we are witnessing a major blip on his irregular radar.
At this stage of his career it looks unlikely the long and disciplined road back to international will be first preference for Shoaib. Speculation linking him to the insigificant lifestyle changes required to become a Bollywood star seems closer to the mark then a 2 year fitness battle to stay in shape for a return to cricket.
For Mohammed Asif the situation is entirely different. He has a sterling career ahead of him and will be more than capable of putting this blemish behind him. It is a shame that Akhtar’s leads off the field came to influence what would have been a productive on field mentoring role for this promising fast bowler. One can only hope Asif returns with the example of Shane Warne in mind, putting himself to the sword with hard work and a desire to succeed despite the set backs.
